The LA Fund For Public Education Launches “Arts Matter” Campaign To Support Arts Education

Campaign features original works of art by world-renowned artists on city buses and outdoor advertising spaces totaling over $4 million in value.

First of its kind, citywide public art exhibition and fundraising campaign targets arts education in nation’s second largest public school system

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – The LA Fund for Public Education today announced the launch of “Arts Matter,” a first of its kind, citywide public art exhibition and fundraising campaign to revitalize arts education in the nation’s second largest public school system.  The widest reaching public art project in Los Angeles’s history, Arts Matter features original works of art by the city’s most renowned artists on city buses and outdoor advertising spaces totaling over $4 million in value and approximately 900 million impressions.  The campaign will fund the development of innovative “arts integration” curricula for the Los Angeles Unified School District and communicate the essential role of arts education in public schools.

“Arts education is critical for helping students develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities,” said LA Fund Chair, Megan Chernin.  “In a district with nearly 80% of our student population living in poverty, in the heart of the world’s creative capital, it is our imperative to ensure our public school students have the resources they need to prepare them for college and their careers.”

With studies showing that arts education is one of the most effective ways of teaching essential skills for today’s workforce, the need for robust arts education has never been clearer.

“We at CBS are very pleased to be able to give back to the community we serve by joining with the LA Fund and the Los Angeles Unified School District in this important effort,” said Leslie Moonves, President and Chief Executive Officer of CBS Corporation.   “The future will belong to creative problem solvers, and this terrific campaign will help prepare the next generation of those unique and valuable colleagues.   That just might be the most valuable contribution we can make to the generation that comes after us.”

CBS Outdoor is a lead sponsor of the $4 million campaign, with additional outdoor media inventory and services donated by Zenith Media and others. The Arts Matter campaign will be concentrated into four separate 4-week “flights” utilizing city buses and hundreds of billboards, bus shelters, wall postings, mall media and bulletins.  The first flight launches with the work of Los Angeles-based artist Barbara Kruger.  Her bus wrap, entitled “School Bus,” and two additional works of art have been commissioned and will appear throughout Los Angeles during October 2012.  Known her bold, eye-catching format and philosophical themes, Kruger’s art for Arts Matter features her signature style and addresses directly and urgently the importance of education, especially in the arts.  ForYourArt produced the public art initiative on the LA Fund’s behalf.

“The LA Fund’s Arts Matter campaign performs a great service for our community,” said CEO DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. “It brings a bright focus to the fact that arts education is crucial for the success of our vibrant creative economy – if there is no arts education, there can be no companies like DreamWorks Animation. But, beyond this, Arts Matter also reminds us that exposure to the arts is essential for any truly meaningful education. The arts give us a deeper understanding of our world and of ourselves. We must fight to keep them alive and well in our public schools.”

Despite a statewide funding crisis that has forced the District to cut nearly $1.5 billion from its annual operating budget, LAUSD is pursuing a bold strategy to ensure that arts education is part of the core curriculum every student receives.   On October 9, board member Nury Martinez will introduce an “Arts at the Core” resolution to ensure District policy supports a comprehensive approach to arts education.  Proceeds from the Arts Matter campaign will support the implementation of the resolution.  “I am so proud that Los Angeles’ greatest artists, our corporate partners and community have stepped up in such a unique way to support arts education for our students,” said Martinez.

“As the center of the creative economy, every LA student should receive the benefits of daily creative learning.  Whether in a college classroom or in the job market, creativity is essential to succeeding in today’s world,” said LAUSD Superintendent, John Deasy. “I want to thank the LA Fund for spearheading this important campaign, which will bring further attention to the pressing need for robust arts education in all Los Angeles schools.”

Multi-platinum recording star Justin Bieber will play a leading role in the “Arts Matter” social media campaign, mobilizing his tens of millions of followers to support robust arts education. “Believe in your dreams. Arts Matter,” says Bieber.  People can participate in the campaign via Twitter (@LAFund), Facebook (www.facebook.com/lafund), Tumblr (http://lafund.tumblr.com), Pinterest (http://pinterest.com/losangelesfund) and the LA Fund’s website (www.lafund.org/#arts-matter).

About the LA Fund for Public Education The Los Angeles Fund for Public Education is a philanthropic organization dedicated to driving positive change in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  The LA Fund invests in innovative, results-oriented programs designed to ensure every student in the nation’s second largest school system has a chance to succeed.

New York City’s ACA Galleries To Host “The Art Of Graham Nash,” An Exhibition Of Photographs, Photo Assemblages And Original Pastels

AN ARTIST’S RECEPTION WILL BE HELD AT ACA GALLERIES ON OCTOBER 18 FROM 5-8 PM

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – Graham Nash has helped shape the world around him through ideas, innovations, and influential works of art for more than four decades. A legendary singer-songwriter, Nash is also an internationally renowned photographer and digital imaging pioneer whose work is represented—by a classic 1969 portrait of David Crosby—in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. “The Art of Graham Nash,” an exhibition featuring a broad range of Nash’s works, opens at New York City’s ACA Galleries on October 11.  The gallery will host an artist’s reception on Thursday, October 18 from 5-8PM.  The show—comprising 50 of Nash’s photographic images, several politically themed photo assemblages and original pastel pieces—runs through October 27.  ACA Galleries is located at (529 W. 20th St., 5th floor, NYC, 10011.  Tel 212-206-8080 www.acagalleries.com)

Inspired by his father, an amateur photographer, Nash first started taking pictures when he was ten years old.  “I had a camera before I had a guitar,” he remembers. Some of the works featured in The Photographic Art of Graham Nash at ACA Galleries were previously published in the book Eye To Eye: Photographs By Graham Nash (Steidl, 2004).  Among the images are portraits of family, friends, self, and fellow music world icons, as well as scenes and cityscapes captured during Nash’s world travels.  At the heart of Nash’s photography is what he has described as, “That decisive moment when it all comes together in that little rectangle in the viewfinder—it all clicks, and then I click.”

Nash is also widely known as an activist in support of causes related to social justice, peace, environmental stewardship, and progressive politics. He addresses these issues in several new and provocative large format photo assemblages—each hand-embellished mixed-media piece examines and questions contemporary political events and societal mores. “I believe that knowledge is power, that information and ideas are vital to our very survival, that our many problems should be faced, and can be dealt with,” says Nash.  “As an artist, I need to express my personal opinions about what goes on around me.  My intent is not to alienate, but to engage.”

Currently, Nash is nearing the end of the U.S. leg of Crosby, Stills and Nash’s 2012 world tour, which concludes in October with five nights at New York City’s Beacon Theatre.  CSN 2012, a 25-song set presenting the group’s first live performance film in more than 20 years, was released earlier this summer and has spent nine weeks in the Top 10 on the Billboard Music Video charts and is currently at #3. Captured in high-definition during the early portion of CSN’s 2012 tour, the set is available worldwide from CSN Records in Blu-ray, DVD/2CD (3 discs), and Digital formats.  A review in American Songwriter noted that, “What comes through is a genuine camaraderie, mutual respect and a joy of performing.”

Born in Blackpool, England, Nash was appointed OBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2010.  He first rose to fame with British Invasion hit makers The Hollies, and went on to form Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968.  Nash has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, and is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Nash has exhibited his photography worldwide.  His work is collected in the book Eye to Eye: Photographs by Graham Nash, and he curates others’ work in Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock ‘n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash. In a third book (and CD collection), Off The Record, Nash’s Manuscript Originals presents handwritten images of the lyrics from 25 of the world’s best loved songs. In 1990, he established Nash Editions, now one of the world’s top photographic printmaking houses—and recognized by the Smithsonian Institution for its role in the invention of digital fine art printing.   www.grahamnash.com

New Featured Artist at Pivot Art Gallery

Pivot Art Gallery is very pleased to present the next artist portfolio in the ongoing series of featured artists at www.pivotartgallery.com. Portraits by Arizona artist Mike Frick are on display at the online gallery.

How to make a bird’s nest by Mike Frick

PRLog (Press Release)Sep 17, 2012 - Artist Mike Frick paints portraits. The work is perhaps casual in the sense of materials – often on cardboard, with corrugations, creases, and printing showing through. There is however, nothing casual about the energy that shines from each painting. From quick sketches to more detailed pieces with built up surfaces, there is always an urgency in the paintings. The energy of the artist comes through in the energy of the brushstrokes and colors resulting in a spontaneity and a momentum that is truly engaging.

The figures (whether or not they have open eyes) gaze directly at the viewer and wear a variety of expressions. From surprised or mournful, aggressive or indifferent, their scrutiny ultimately challenges a viewer to stare right back and try to get to know them. Who are you and what exactly are you trying to say? Why did the artist paint your picture? And why that way?

Ultimately, the questions boil down to: What stories can a face tell and how much does a viewers own experience contribute to (and therefore twist) that narrative? What can be learned from a painting? Through his work, Frick insists, and I agree, the answer is going to be different for each of us, but always significant.

Mike Frick is currently based in Arizona. Born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1959 he studied fine art at The Torpedo Factory, Alexandria, Virginia; Northern Virginia Community College; and editorial design at Texas State Technical College, Waco, Texas. His work is included in private collections throughout the United States and Europe. More info at: mikefrick.com

*Thanksgiving Special* Featured Art—Norman Rockwell’s Freedom from Want

Norman Rockwell’s iconic Four Freedoms (Freedom from Fear, Freedom from Want, Freedom of Worship and Freedom of Speech) were inspired by the Four Freedoms State of the Union Address given by Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 6, 1941. One of Norman Rockwell’s most well-known and hard to find pieces is Freedom from Want, which was published on the March 6, 1943 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. The famous painting was also included on the cover of Rockwell’s 1946 book Norman Rockwell, Illustrator, written during the height of Rockwell’s fame, as he was then known as America’s most popular illustrator.

Of Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms, Freedom from Want is the most seen pieces of art—often featured in art books and has become a nostalgic symbol of the American Thanksgiving holiday. The painting depicts an elderly couple serving a Thanksgiving turkey to a happy and eagerly awaiting family. The iconic Freedom from Want painting promotes the importance of family togetherness and traditional values. Norman Rockwell’s image is dominated by regionalism and idealism.

Norman Rockwell sums up the message of Freedom from Want saying, “I paint life as I would like it to be.”

The unity portrayed in Freedom from Want is what makes the painting a classic image for the Thanksgiving holiday, and despite efforts to recreate the image and the message the painting displays, no other artist has accomplished what Rockwell accomplished with Freedom from Want.

Featured Art: “Places to Seek” by Penny Benjamin Peterson

At the age of 5, Penny Benjamin Peterson moved to Arizona, where her love for the desert began– inspiring her artwork.

“When the desert is in full bloom it is awesome. A lush desert sounds like an oxymoron but it does make quite a transformation. These prickly, sometimes dry-looking strange plants suddenly come alive with color,” says Peterson. “The desert is still beautiful with its subtle changes in terrain and the way the sunlight and evening sunset changes the colors of the mountains and the cacti. I am influenced by these observations and my paintings reflect this with their bold splashes of color mixed with the serene, calming, spiritual effects of introspection.”

By continuing her art education, she learned as much as should about art in order to begin sharing her work with others and becoming involved in many local art organizations.  Currently, Peterson’s art can be found throughout the United States and Canada by corporate and private collectors, including Circus Circus Enterprises and First International Bank, and is perfect for the hospitality industry.
